    • WINNERS of Public Art Project announced

      10.11.2011

SkyParks Business Centre has announced the winners of the call for artists it had launched earlier this year.  With the collaboration of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, SkyParks Business Centre launched a call for artists last May inviting both established and new artists to submit their vision for an art project. The winning project entitled SKYSCAPE is a collaboration between Kane Cali, Neil Pace O'Shea and Vanessa Borg.

      The Judging Process
Over 25 applications were received and two proposals were shortlisted following the first judging session. Both entries were then asked to produce a to-scale model of their vision for the second judging session. After long discussions between an expert panel of judges, which included representatives from the local art scene, Heritage Malta and Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, one project emerged triumphant.

      The Artists
The three artists who pooled their abilities brought a wealth of talent and interest in architectural design, sculpture and glass to their project.
"With this concept we tried to exploit our various skills in the fields of interior architecture, sculpture and glass design to create a monument which would contain the soul of aviation" said Vanessa Borg. All three have explored their studies further in the UK and are now returning to Malta to establish themselves here. This kind of highly visible project will certainly help them put their mark on Malta.

      Our comments
Alan Borg, General Manager at SkyParks said, "The main aim behind this initiative was for  SkyParks to give  artists an exciting and challenging opportunity to create an innovative, contemporary public art project which will act as a future landmark for the airport and the Maltese Islands. We hope that other private companies will be encouraged to follow suit and include arts initiatives as part of their CSR campaigns" he concluded.

Austin Calleja, MIA's CEO ad interim added "I'd like to thank our panel of expert judges who took time out of their busy schedules to give this competition the time and attention it deserved in order to choose what we hope the public will think of as a landmark as well as a monument."

      Where and when
The project will be situated in the outdoor terrace on level 1, making it highly visible from the airport terminal, the ring road and car park at Malta International Airport. The sculpture will be placed for permanent display in time for the building's inauguration, next year.

      • COMPETITION for ARTISTS launched

        01.06.2011

SkyParks Business Centre is calling artists to take part in a competition, with the chance to showcase their work at one of the leading corporate addresses on the island.

With the support and collaboration of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the soon-to-be inaugurated Business Centre is organising a nationwide competition inviting both established and emerging artists to submit their vision for a sculpture or art project which will be unveiled at the same time as the official inauguration of SkyParks.

The competition will involve a two stage competitive process. Stage one will require interested artists or artist teams to submit details of the project, a proposal of intentions, visualisations, technical information and a detailed budget. Stage two will involve a short listing process with a select number of artists invited to develop their ideas in the form of a scale model. An interview process will conclude the final part of the selection. The artist/s whose work is deemed most impressive will then be selected. Criteria for selection will include amongst others, artistic quality and contemporary relevance, technical feasibility and sustainability, conservation requirements and health and safety issues.

The art project will be situated in the outdoor terrace on level 1, a few metres to the left of the entrance, hence highly visible from the ring road, the airport terminal and car park of Malta International Airport.

Submissions of all the required documents will be accepted at:

        SkyParks Development Ltd.
        SkyParks Business Centre
        Malta International Airport
        Luqa 4000

        until 1200hrs of Monday 22nd August 2011.
